Tostones with shrimp

Today we will prepare some delicious tostones with shrimp, a variation of the traditional Caribbean patacones. This dish is very easy to make and has a very special touch of flavor since we will add hot sauce.

This is a tasty appetizer that can contain several toppings, is ideal to be enjoyed with a cold beer and can be combined with many foods.


  • 12 large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 large green plantain, cut into 12 slices
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 tomato
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons garlic sauce
  • 1 ½ tablespoons sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon chipotle sauce
  • 1 medium avocado, ripe
  • Juice of one lime
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro

  1. Toss the shrimp with 1 tablespoon of the garlic sauce to coat evenly.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a large skillet over medium heat and cook plantains for 3 to 5 minutes or until lightly browned, turning once.
  3. Remove from skillet and place plantains on a wooden chopping board and mash plantains into medium-thick discs.
  4. Return plantains to skillet with remaining oil; cook, turning once, for 4 minutes or until golden brown on both sides, then remove from skillet and drain on paper towels.
  5. Add shrimp to skillet and cook, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes or until shrimp are pink.
  6. While shrimp are cooling, chop tomato, onion, mash avocado in a medium bowl, add sour cream, lime juice, 1 tablespoon cilantro and mix well.
  7. Cut the shrimp in half lengthwise, place the plantain slices on a plate, top with the avocado, tomato and onion mixture, shrimp, garlic cream, chipotle sauce and remaining cilantro.
